Wim van der Wurff (Leiden):
Direct, indirect and other speech in Bengali newspaper reporting

Donnerstag, 09.30-10.00

Although both direct and indirect speech exist in Bengali, there appears to be a strong preference for the use of direct speech in most text-types. In this paper, I will discuss the question what determines the choice between these two (and other) modes of speech construction in Bengali newspaper reporting. I will first provide some figures on the overall frequency of use of the various modes in Bengali newspapers, and compare them with what has been found for English and German. Next I will sketch several hypotheses that have been put forward to account for the choice between the modes (in particular between direct and indirect speech) in European languages. In the major part of my talk I will then try to determine which of these hypotheses best fits the Bengali data.
