Ad Neeleman (UCL):
The Lexical Flexibility of Particle Verbs

Dieser Vortrag muß leider entfallen.

This talk addresses the paradox that particle verbs on the one hand can be input to morphological rules, while on the other they can be separated by verb second and other movement operations. I will argue that this type of heterogeneous behavior is a consequence of the way in which particle verbs (and more general: idioms) are stored in the lexicon.

Lexical storage is subject to economy considerations, which implies that lexical entries will often be underspecified. Given that particle verbs are junctures of heads, underspecification will quite naturally lead to ambiguity with respect to their syntactic/morphological status. Independent evidence for this analysis will be based on cases in which syntactic idioms are realized morphologically and, if time allows, on the distribution of particles in the Scandinavian languages.
