Aditi Lahiri (Konstanz):
Relevance of phonological representation for language comprehension

Mittwoch, 16.30 Uhr

What the phonological representation of words in the mental lexicon looks like is a very controversial issue. All possible linguistic units have been suggested including the obvious ones like phonemes and syllables. Units like diphones have also found favour particularly with researchers interested in speech research. Finally, exemplar models with fully specified whole word representations are much more popular in the automatic speech recognition field.

I will argue that experimental psycholinguistic evidence points to an underspecified phonological representation which is made up of features with segmental place holders. Listeners use a parsing strategy built on universal principles when accessing and recognizing words. Moreover, I will argue that such a representation is not only required for human language comprehension, but is also efficient and necessary for machine recognition.
