Starting from a theory of pragmatics viewed as a general functional (i.e. cognitive, social, and cultural) perspective on language and communication, this contribution to the workshop will present a critical look at the practice of intercultural communicat ion research, focusing in particular on definitions - whether explicit or implicit - of the research object 'intercultural communication.'
