Susanne Scheiter (München):
Social conselling for migrants - how speech actions patterns change in and are shaped by intercultural communication

Freitag, 11.30 Uhr

In this paper I will present an outline of a research project currently realized at the Institute of German as a Foreign Language (Institut für Deutsch als Fremdsprache) at the University of Munich, namely "Social counselling for migrants - intercultural communication in institutions". The project is carried out in cooperation with the "Arbeiterwohlfahrt e.V. (AWO)", the largest non-governmental social organisation in Germany.

Our work is based on data recorded in the different counselling institutions of the AWO in both intra- and intercultural settings and covers different languages (German, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian). The clients of these counselling institutions are migrants of the 1., 2. and 3. generation. Counselling topics are e.g. unemployment, problems with residence and work permit, private problems like divorce and family conflicts and even major criminal cases.

In particular, I will examine the question of how speech action patterns differ according to whether or not they are realised in intra- or intercultural discourse and which differences occur between the speech actions of clients coming from the 1., 2. or 3. generation of migrance. Among others it will be shown that the communicative activities of the 1. generation on the one hand and those of the 2. and 3. on the other hand can not to the same degree be explained by reference to the originating cultures of the interactants.
