Mary Carroll (Heidelberg):
Expressing directionality: Perspectives on motion events in language production

Mittwoch, 16.30 Uhr

Movements of entities from one place to another are anchored in a physical setting and generally form part of a specific set of activities. The extent to which a change in place is explicitly located by marking the places involved can be linked to the overall perspective selected by the speaker when conceptualising motion events for expression in communicative tasks such as narratives and instructions. The study shows how English and German differ in the way in which perspectives on place/direction in motion events are grammaticalised (case markings, particle verbs in German but not in English).

The cross-linguistic analyses were carried out on the basis of the same set of narrative and instructional tasks with 15 speakers for each language group.
